Vlammie crowned Cansa debutante 2017
Over 30 learners from the schools involved in this year’s Cansa Debutantes competition put together R340 000 for the organisation
November 13, 2017

MBOMBELA – Aliya Omar (16) has been crowned as the CANSA Debutante 2018. The grade 10 learner from Hoërskool Bergvlam follows in the footsteps of her sister, Dr Aadilah Omar-Abdulah (30), who won in 2003. Omar-Abdulah was also a pupil at Bergvlam.

Omar beat 29 other learners from Nelspruit Hoërskool, Uplands College and Lowveld High School, for the coveted prize.

“Behind me were very strong people, like my CRAB campaign volunteers, who helped me,” she said.
“It has been an amazing journey with my mom, dad, my friends and Allah to whom I give all thanks,” she added. Aliya was not planning on winning, but to make a difference. To not simply donate money, but also make an impact in the community.
“I feel like I have accomplished that, and I feel very fulfilled.”
“We are so proud of her,” said her mother, Firoza Omar. “She did all the hard work. She was motivated and this shows that she is very capable,” she added.

The CANSA debutantes is a fund-raising initiative, where pupils get to try their hand at spreading cancer awareness while raising funds for the organisation. With 30 learners qualifying for an invite at the final gala evening, held at Bundu Lodge, they managed to raise R340 000.

Those who are unable to raise the minimum amount, yet exert themselves in their community service efforts also get recognised at the gala. This year’s debutantes were also emotional, as it was CANSA’s spokesman Jacqueline Weideman’s last. Weideman is leaving Lowveld CANSA after six years with the organisation.

“I am going to miss it, but the season has come for me to change directions,” she said. Weideman is not leaving the Lowveld and will, as a result, continue to volunteer at the organisation.
Two learners from Uplands College, Sara Archdeacon and Hannah Garratt, tied in second place in the service-delivery category. They were also both second runner-ups. Drew Ersleine was first runner-up.

LOWVELD CANCER ASSOCIATION DEBUTANTE PROJECT

The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) Mpumalanga runs the CANSA DEBUTANTE PROJECT annually at High Schools in the Mpumalanga Province.

This project offers young people in the age group 16 to 21 years the opportunity to work alongside with the staff of the Cancer Association for a year to raise funds and spread the message about cancer in South Africa. CANSA as an organization is committed to our youth – and our “CANSA on the Move for the Youth” campaign is enhanced by this project.

This is an amazing year for these young people filled with great fun, amazing new opportunities and unique experiences. They are educated about the organization CANSA, the disease cancer and they are taught how to do project planning and how to execute fundraising events. Pupils are taught how to approach businesses for sponsorship – and we guide and assist them all the way.

Each debutante has the challenge to raise at least R2500 through the year and at the end of the year they are rewarded with 10% of their total income. This amount is handed over to them during the annual Debutante Ball held in Nelspruit and Witbank, and then the Mpumalanga winner is crowned at the final ball. At this ball we give acknowledgement to each individual debutante and each school participating – making this a very prestigious project for all schools.

During their debutante year these pupils deliver amazing community service – and this achievement is of great value to them in the future.
