“A mother is she who can take the place of all others but whose place no one else can take.”- Cardinal Mermillod
When we cry, her hugs comfort you. If you’re happy, her smile encourages you. And if you’re hungry, her purse feeds you. To say that we could’ve gotten this far without the influences from our mothers would be a lie. Sure, we may fight with them, ignore their ‘advice’ and complain about them for days on end, but despite all the ups and downs the fact remains the same: Our mothers are some of the “realest” people we know. Do they throw unnecessary shade to your face? Yes, they do. But behind your back, your mother stands up for you and praises you at any open opportunity. And it is because of this that on the 27th of April 2016, Hoërkool Bergvlam held a Mother and Daughter Tea.
The function took place in the school’s restaurant and focused on celebrating the special bond between mothers and daughters. The guests were welcomed with cocktails and later they were served tea and delicious cakes from Mugg and Bean. Their morning was filled with touching speeches and a play that had everyone in tears. Later… Delia Moolman, a dress designer from Over the Moon , came to come speak to the guests about The Matric Farewell Dance, giving the girls helpful advice with some models to show off her own collection of dresses. These models were our grade 12 girls: Thuli Mthembu, Cleopatra Tolla, Micaela Mansfield, Kristin Sabu and Jesse Thorpe.
The Mother and Daughter Tea was a big success as it reminded us of what really is important. It isn’t the amount of pocket money you get per month or the fact that your mom won’t let you go to all the parties, but rather it served as a reminder of what a privilege it is to have that special mother-and-daughter bond.
